How to create a new Triumph

5/7/2012: I discovered major problems with the traits and triggers this weekend. The Traits as setup have 4 levels, level 1 does nothing, level 2 is "Prospective Triumphor", level 3 is Triumphor and the description says wait to entr Rome till the senate approves it, however the actual triggers only move the character to level 3 on entering Rome. Level 4 was Celebrating the Triumph but it doesnt seem to be removed when the character actuall gets Celebrated Triumphor, a seperate trait. It looks like I will have to rewrite all of it if I want it to work.

The Romans celebrated triumph over many more people and places than the game is currently set to recognize. This example will show you how to add triumph over Lusitania and change the characters Cognomen to Hispanicus.
First do not use notepad. Use notepad++ for all editing.

  • Open export_descr_character_traits.txt. It should be in the EB/Data folder.
  • Find the section on the other Triumphs.
  • At the end of that section add a new trait with 2 levels. Change all occurrences of Hispania to the area you want the triumph to cover.
  • Set a Threshold. Most triumphs are 5 for the first level and 20 for the second but if it is a small area like Sicily you may want to go lower.

  • Now find the end of the Traits section and where the Trigger section begins. If you don't want to change the cognomen then you an leave this out. Make sure it is reall at the end of the traits section. Otherwise it cause strange name problems.

  • Next go to the end of EDCT.
  • There are 3 type of Triggers you can add:
    1. Enslaving a population.
    2. Conquering a city.
    3. Fighting a battle (2 examples a small and a large battle)
In this case I will set it up to give points for enslaving anyone in the Lustitanian faction (spain), for conquering Oxtraca which they should own, and for fighting battles against them. You will notice the number of points only adds up to 7. You will have to win a number of battles and enslave a lot of cities to get to 20.

The following are all real Triumphs celebrated by Romans in pre-imperial times and how I would suggest to set them up in game. For those that require taking a single city I would create them with only 1 level. Almost all these that are against a people stress the Battles and enslavements, not the cities. For the location based ones stress the cities and make the potential Triumphor conquer them all to be awarded the Triumph.

Cognomens/Agnomens are a funny thing. There are cases when Romans got cognomens from the relief of a single siege (Marcus Valerius Maximus Corvinus Messalla) and it was hereditary for 800 years. Other times it seems to have lasted for only the lifetime of the original holder. Just because a Triumph is awarded does not always mean there is a change in the cognomen, and cognomens change without a Triumph. Real Triumphs required that the prospective triumphor must have held the office of dictator, consul or praetor and must have had 5000+ enemy slain in 1 battle. Neither are scripted.

Note the game uses the external name for cities (I think).

In all I counted 14 Triumphs that included Carthage in some fashion. About half were naval Triumphs and only 4 did not include Carthaginians allies as well. There is a lot of potenial for different Triumphs against the same foe. C. Aurelius Cotta and Cn. Cornelius Scipio Asina both had Triumphs against the Carthaginins in some fashion, Asina had 2. Both are starting Roman generals.
