Embark
The surface is the outer layer of defenses and the initial location of the wagon. It has multiple stages from the initial layout to a minimally secure citadel to a fully walled in fort.

Near Surface
The nearsurface is built in order to provide an immediate secure location, set up to pierce an aquifer if any, use the soil for farms and take advantage of wood on the surface. It is best located 2 levels down so a dry moat can be dug around the surface works but in can be one level down or even deeper. In the event rock is reached without having to deal with an aquifer it can be on the last soil level.

Upper Security
A transition area between the aquifer stairs and the main central shaft. Should include at least one gate for security purposes in case the Near surface works are overrun. Will likely include the Armory, may include a public library and tavern.

Rock Level One
The first level may not be the first physical level underground but it is the main of the fort. Found here are the entrance to the bedrooms, kitchens, alcohol brewing and butchery work areas as well as in internal pastures. This level should always be entirely rock and below any aquifers. Often a secondary stair leads up from in between the kitchens and drink production to the farm in soil levels above.

Rock Level Two
Crystal, Stone and Clothing workshops are found here as well as additional bedrooms. The central core of the bedrooms is often built as a hospital rather than the 4 rooms.

Level three is dedicated to producing metal and metal products.

A transition area between the main central shaft and digs down to the caverns. Should include at least one gate for security purposes in case of Forgotten beasts. n.
