The Giant Oak
Based on The West Gatehouse by Andy Tabor

A large monster oak tree has taken up residence in front of the gatehouse. It must be defeated or bypassed in order to enter the city. It killed many people trying to flee the city after the comet struck and is rumored to contain vast treasure in its trunk.

Terrain

Terrain should be setup within an area of 4'x4' or 4'x6' for more warbands. The south 1' should be occupied by the gatehouse and wall. The gatehouse has a single entrace that lies along the center line of the board, it should be wide (apr 5") it should pass entirely through the gatehouse to the South edge of the board. At least one ladder or stair should exist on the interior(South) face of the wall/gatehouse. Players may take turns setting up outdoor terrain (trees, hills, rocks) in the area north of the wall. No terrain should be placed within 8" of the center of the board.

Warbands

Each player rolls a die, the highest chooses which side East or West he wishes to setup on. Players may setup anywhere within the 8" of the edge of the board. All warriors must be North of the wall.

Special Rules

The exterior faces of the Wall and Gatehouse can not be climbed with a climb roll. Only with the use of ladders, rope and hook, or similar device.

Occupying the center of the board is the Giant Oak. Each warband will roll D3 for the number of saplings to be placed on the board. Saplings can be placed anywhere within 8" of the center of the board. Players should take turns placing Saplings. Saplings should be placed before the players roll for warband placement. The Giant Oak and Saplings will always be the last player to go.

The Giant Oak and Saplings have the following:
Fear
Immune to Psychology
Flammable: The Giant Oak and Saplings are flammable and will take a S5 hit if they are hit with a flammable weapon.
Large Target

The Giant Oak and Saplings will attack any warrior who enters the 8" clear area, or tries to pass through the gatehouse.

Normal starting.

Ending the Game

The game ends when all warbands but one have failed thier route test. If there are more than 2 warbands any two may ally to defeat the Oak and Saplings.

Experience
+1 Survives. If a hero or henchman groups survies the battle, they gain +1 experience.
+1 Winning Leader. The leader of the winning warband gains +1 experience.
+1 Per enemy out of action. Any Hero earn +1 experience for each enemy he puts out of action.
+1 Per Hero for Each wound taken of the Giant Oak. any Hero can eat +1 Experience for each wound he takes off the Giant Oak.
+2 Per Hero that kills the Giant Oak. Any hero can earn +2 Experience for taking the Giant Oak out of action.

Campaign Specific Rules
In the inital campaign turn the warbands can not truly ally against the oak. They may stop killing each other and concentrate on the Oak but the Scenario does not end until one band routes. Once in play the Giant Oak will remain at the chosen gate until destroyed. That gate is considered impassable without a fighting agaisnt the Giant Oak. Run single band scenarios with the band approaching from the proper direction (interior/exterior) and having to get all members safely off the opposite edge of the board. No Exploration after a single band fight vs the Oak unless they kill it. Add an addtional D3 Saplings any time the number falls below 2 and the Oak is not killed.

-1 killing a Sapling A warband loses 1 Fanatic Hatred Point for killing a Sapling.
-2 killing the Giant Oak. A warband loses 2 Fanatic Hatred Points for killing the Giant Oak.
